The meaning "fundamental character, essence" is from 1570s; to get to the bottom of some matter is from 1773. The meaning "posterior of a person" (the sitting part) is from 1794. Bottoms up as a call to finish one's drink is from 1875. Bottom dollar "the last dollar one has" is from 1857. To do or feel something from the bottom of (one's) heart is from 1540s. Bottom-feeder, originally in reference to fish, is from 1866.
mid-15c., "primary, original, pertaining to a foundation," modeled on Late Latin fundamentalis "of the foundation," from Latin fundamentum "foundation" (see fundament). In music (1732) it refers to the lowest note of a chord. Fundamentals (n.) "primary principles or rules" of anything is from 1630s.
The recent concept of neural genoarchitecture (or genoarchitectonics) is examined from several angles, aiming to clarify the rationale for this new approach in causal and descriptive neuroanatomy. Gene expression patterns can be used as topographic stains revealing architectonic borders that may clarify, dispute, or complicate existing brain anatomical subdivisions based on other methods, while increasing our understanding of how they arise in ontogenesis and evolution. A section of the text deals with differential regulation of gene expression in an ontogenetic causal network, attending to the structure of the genome and the functional peculiarities of enhancer and repressor regulatory regions that modulate gene transcription. The emergence of regionally characteristic sets of active transcription factors represents a critical concept, molecular identity, which can be applied to discrete brain territories and neuronal populations. Gene regulation is tied to positional effects, that is, topologically invariant domains of gene expression and natural boundaries, which can be correlated with anatomic ones. The large-scale stability of these patterns among vertebrates underpins molecularly the structural brain Bauplan, and is the fundament of field homology. The study of genoarchitectonic boundaries is presented as a crucial objective of modern neuroanatomic research. At most brain regions, new neuronal populations are being detected thanks to their differential genoarchitectonic features.
Self-organization refers to the emergence of an overall order in time and space of a given system that results from the collective interactions of its individual components. This concept has been widely recognized as a core principle in pattern formation for multi-component systems of the physical, chemical and biological world. It can be distinguished from self-assembly by the constant input of energy required to maintain order-and self-organization therefore typically occurs in non-equilibrium or dissipative systems. Cells, with their constant energy consumption and myriads of local interactions between distinct proteins, lipids, carbohydrates and nucleic acids, represent the perfect playground for self-organization. It therefore comes as no surprise that many properties and features of self-organized systems, such as spontaneous formation of patterns, nonlinear coupling of reactions, bi-stable switches, waves and oscillations, are found in all aspects of modern cell biology. Ultimately, self-organization lies at the heart of the robustness and adaptability found in cellular and organismal organization, and hence constitutes a fundamental basis for natural selection and evolution.This article is part of the theme issue 'Self-organization in cell biology'.

Its contributions range from the provision of drinking water to food production, from sanitation to climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction, from ecosystem and biodiversity support to land surface stability. This side event follows up the UN-Water Groundwater Summit on Groundwater: Making the Invisible Visible, organized by UNESCO on 6-8 December 2022.
